Step by step tutorial

Let‘s start by selecting a stock. Tap on S&P 500 and you should see the chart on the left.

The chart is scrollable. It is also possible to rotate the device to get a landscape view:

Below the chart view are some indicators. You can configure the type of the chart, the indicators and parameters of the indicators using the “Settings“ button.

To add a new symbol press the "+" sign. You can now choose if you want to download data from Yahoo Finance or from Google Finance.

Adding a new stock symbol

On the page that appears, you can enter the stock symbol and press "Check and Download from Yahoo". If the symbol was correct, the field "Name" is filled automatically and the data of the last two years is downloaded.

If you do not know the symbol, you can open an embedded browser to search yahoo for the symbol. To open this browser press "Search symbol using Yahoo". To open Safari you can press "Open Yahoo website".

Updating stock data

To get current stock data for all stocks, use the update button at the bottom of the stock list screen. It updates the data of all stocks using the historical data download of Yahoo Finance and Google Finance. For Yahoo Finance, also the current intraday value is downloaded.

Hint: The historical data of Yahoo Finance lags about 1.5 days behind. So there can be a gap in the data, which means that yesterday's values is missing. That value will be filled in automatically when you update the data the next time (and the value is available then). This problem does also not occur, when you regularly update the data, because then StockCharts uses the last downloaded intraday values to fill the gap until the historical values are available.

Configuring the chart

To add or remove indicators press the "Settings" button.

A list will be displayed that contains the currently active indicators. You can add a new one by pressing the "+" sign or edit an existing by selecting it.

You can see the edit view on the left. Select the name of the indicator to choose another type of indicator. Below the name you can see and edit the parameters of the current indicator. The indicator parameters can be freely configured to any value you want.

The parameters of some indicators contain a color setting. By selecting it you can choose the color of this indicator. For some indicator types like SMA or EMA it can be useful to add multiple indicators of that type with different parameters and colors.

If you wish to remove an indicator, press the trash bin icon in the upper right corner.
